Webinar Summary

The panel addressed the ethical implications of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into nursing education, focusing on confidentiality, academic integrity, and professional standards. Key concerns included the risk of plagiarism, the importance of citing sources, and ensuring that AI serves as an adjunct to—not a replacement for—critical thinking and decision-making skills. The necessity for faculty and students to develop competence with emerging technologies was emphasized, along with the responsibility to verify AI-generated outputs for accuracy and bias.

Data privacy issues related to FERPA and HIPAA were discussed, highlighting the importance of not inputting sensitive information into AI systems. The panel stressed the need for institutions to develop clear policies and guidelines on AI use, educating both faculty and students on appropriate practices. Strategies to prevent unauthorized AI use included setting clear expectations, fostering transparency, and modeling ethical behavior.

The discussion underscored the unreliability of current AI detection tools, suggesting that open conversations with students about academic integrity are more effective than relying solely on detection software. The panel encouraged continuous personal growth among educators to stay informed about AI’s evolving role in nursing education. Panelists shared innovative examples of incorporating AI tools in teaching, including using AI-generated avatars for patient simulations and developing chatbots programmed to respond as specific patient types.

The webinar concluded with a call to action for institutions to craft comprehensive AI policies and for educators to engage proactively in shaping the ethical integration of AI into curricula. Participants were invited to a follow-up webinar focusing on best practices for AI integration in simulation-based learning.
